Skillnader på arbetsplatsen

Vattenhålet på en svensk arbetsplats är fikarummet och kaffemaskinen. Detta råder det ingen tvekan om. I USA var det inte ens en självklarhet att det överhuvudtaget fanns ett lunch eller fikarum (där kallade man det för break room om det fanns). Här är det en självklarhet. I USA fanns det vattenfontäner i korridorerna eller utanför toaletterna och det var där man kanske kunde träffa på någon sponant som gått iväg för att hämta vatten i en mugg eller stod och drack en slurk. Här spontanträffas man framför kaffemaskinen istället. Kaffe är svenskens vatten. Kaffe är det första man erbjuder sina gäster/besökare då de kommer. I USA ligger kaffet inte alls etta på listan. Där blir man istället erbjuden kall dryck i första hand som antigen vatten eller läsk. I södern vatten, läsk eller iste.

Detta är vårat fika/lunch rum på jobbet. Nu är det pyntat med fina julstjärnor. Det finns också stora fönster för att släppa in så mycket ljus som möjligt. Men också inredningen är ljus och modern. Här skiljer sig en amerikansk och en svensk arbetsplats åt igen. I USA är det inte alls självklart att fikarummet har fönster alls. Det är långt ifrån alla kontor som ens har fönster och folk reflekterar inte över det därborta eller tycker att det är otänkbart att jobba i ett fönsterlöst kontor vilket en svensk absolut skulle göra. Jag förstår att man här värdesätter både stora fönster och ljus inredning för att det just är så mörkt under vinterhalvåret.

Här har vi våran kaffemaskin. Den brygger faktiskt riktigt gott kaffe som ofta får en ganska god skummig och krämig yta utan att man kör med mjölk. Det är riktiga kaffebönor som mals och bryggs direkt. Förutom kaffe kan man få alla möjliga kaffevarianter så som cappuchino, latte ect. Det finns tevatten och även nyponsoppa som man kan hämta här.

Något annat som det dräller av i juletider på arbetsplatser och överallt man kommer ja till och med på gymet är pepparkakor. Jag tycker dessa burkar vi har på jobbet är rätt fina uteseendemässigt. Min dos och kvot på pepparkakor för året känner jag redan att jag har fått. Det är nästan så att pepparkakorna förföljer en. De doftar ju gott men jag försöker se till att inte äta allt för många. Förutom pepparkakor så dyker det upp allt möjligt gotte nu på jobbet. Några företag levererade sina stora chokladaskar idag och dessa praliner började redan försvinna i ett nafs. Det märks att det är sista veckan innan jul nu.

Nästa vecka kommer det nog också vara rätt lungt på jobbet för det är många som tagit dagarna här innan julafton ledigt. Det är ju också en skillnad mellan Sverige och USA. Många här ser till att få två eller till och med tre veckor ledigt kring jul. I USA har man ju bara juldagen ledigt och nyårsdagen. Juldagen infaller dessutom på en lördag i år så amrisarnas jul blir som vilken vanlig helg som helst. Lite kompensation känner jag att jag får för mörkret i dessa juletider ändå. Jag kommer att jobba nästa vecka också men sedan så har jag plannerat att vara ledig fram tills 10:e januari.

Festligheter på G

Nu är det inte långt kvar till jul alls. Jag kan faktiskt knappt fatta att det är julafton nästa fredag. Igår kväll var C på julfest med jobbet och idag är det min tur. Det lär bli lite av en överraskning. Vi har haft en fest kommitée som planerat och jag vet inte riktigt vad de har planerat. Det ska bli kul att se vad det blir iallafall. Men innan vi får det roliga så har det varit städdag på jobbet också. Det ska tydligen putsas och dammas så att det blir julfint på labben och kontor.

Jag älskar att gå förbi den här ljusbutiken vid St. Eriksplan och just nu känns deras skyltfönster så juligt och vackert med alla fina ljusstakar och stjärnor. En vit jul lär det bli i år. Det har SMHI lovat och jag tror inte att de kommer att ha några problem att hålla vare sig det löftet eller prognosen.

Det ska komma mer snö här i slutet på veckan. Ja det är bråda dagar och mycket som ska hinnas med in i det sista. Det har varit otroligt hektiskt på jobbet senaste veckorna. Tyvärr har vi råkat ut för en hel de oväntade problem som stöpt vårat schema så det får gå som det går med tanke på att vi ändå gjort vårat bästa. Sekvensmaskiner är inte de lättaste varelser att handskas med alla gånger. Det ska bli riktigt skönt med lite jullov. Jag har sett till att få vara ledig dagen innan julafton iallafall och sedan fram till den 10 januari :-)

Så här vintrigt och vackert var det för några dagar sedan och imorgon förväntas det komma mer snö så en vit jul lär det ju bli :-)

Out door sights in Stockholm

We live very close to one of Stockholms ski slopes. There is plenty of snow by now and the ski slope opened last Monday. It is open in the evenings as well as during the weekends. Actually C was there and tried it out one evening last week. The slope is not very long so he said you ski down hill for about two minutes and then you stand in line for five minutes to take the lift up hill and that takes another five minutes. The ski slope was still kind of icy but C had fun. I met several persons the other week on the tram carrying snow boards on their way to the ski slope, that felt kind of exotic. It made me feel like I was in the alps or some where like that. I like the idea anyway that there is a ski slope in the middle of the city practically and that we can almost walk there from where we live now.

Something very very Swedish is what you can see in the picture below. Two Swedes standing still with their eyes closed and facing the sun soaking up the sunlight. You may think that looks very silly and funny and I admit it does but still I completely understand it by now considering that the days are so short here close to the north pole and considering that there are many days that you don´t even get to see the sun at all because the skies are grey. It made me so happy yesterday to see the sun shine. We both got so exited and felt we just HAD to take a walk and take the opportunity to get some of that sunlight.

Sun shine is very important to us Swedes and light in general is very important to us considering that our winter is so long and dark. We run out when the sun comes out and we choose light colors in our homes and for our furniture. We light plenty of candles during winter and love to spend time outside during the summer.

I love that you can both see people skiing in the middle of the city and that you can do it if you like. I love the fact that you can do so many outdoor sports without much effort. You can just step out your own door and the opportunities are almost endless. Here you don´t have to plan too much in advance neither do you have to get yourself and all your equipment into the car and drive somewhere to be able to go skiing or jogging or for a nice walk.

I would say that Swedes are very fitness oriented. You see plenty of people out running or like this man to the right that is out power walking with his walking sticks. No one is afraid of the cold or the snow. I am still so impressed with the level of fitness that I see here everyday. I guess I am still used to life in the deep South where a simple walk is almost considered super healthy. One of my best friends told me yesterday that she is going to ski the famous Wasaloppet that is a ski contest that is 56 miles! I am so impressed. I don´t think I could make it. I am not that Swedish yet to be eager to try it out. I still work out Monday to Friday but training for something like that puts your exercicing on a whole new level. But I do love the out door possibilities and the ease and many opportunities that there are even right in the middle of the city center.

Today is Lucia in Sweden

Today is the 13^th of December and in Sweden and Scandinavia it is a special day as we celebrate Saint Lucia. It is the celebration of light and light is exactly what is needed the most here at this time of the year. In traditional celebrations, Saint Lucy comes as a young woman with lights and sweets. It is one of the few saint days observed in Scandinavia. In some forms, a procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles, while others in the procession hold only a single candle each. In Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Finland, Lucy (called Lucia) it is venerated on December 13 in a ceremony where a girl is elected to portray Lucia. Wearing a white gown with a red sash and a crown of candles on her head, she walks at the head of a procession of women, each holding a candle. The candles symbolize the fire that refused to take St. Lucia's life when she was sentenced to be burned. The women sing a Lucia song while entering the room, to the melody of the traditional Neapolitan song Santa Lucia; the Italian lyrics describe the view from Santa Lucia in Naples, the various Scandinavian lyrics are fashioned for the occasion, describing the light with which Lucia overcomes the darkness. Each Scandinavian country has lyrics in their native tongues. After finishing this song, the procession sings Christmas carols or more songs about Lucia. A similar version occurs in Scandinavian communities and churches in the United States.

The modern tradition of having public processions in the Swedish cities started in 1927 when a newspaper in Stockholm elected an official Lucia for Stockholm that year. The initiative was then followed around the country through the local press. Today most cities in Sweden appoint a Lucia every year. Schools elect a Lucia and her maids among the students and a national Lucia is elected on national television from regional winners. The regional Lucias will visit shopping malls, old people's homes and churches, singing and handing out pepparkakor(gingerbread).

A traditional sweet bun baked with saffron is served on this particular day and is here kalled a “Lussekatt”. But they are eaten all through December and not just on this particular day. I baked some this year too. We usually eat them also for each Sunday in December leading up to Christmas eve on the so called “advent Sundays”.

Tredje Advent

Tredje advent, tredje ljuset tänt. Härlig skön start på söndagen med lång frukost i lugn och ro.

Det blev en lite extra lyxig frulle idag med både nybakade pepparkaks scones och risgrynsgröt med mycket kanel. Jag gjorde gröten igår eftersom det tar så pass lång tid att fixa den. C fick också bidra till morgonens grötfrukost genom att diska kastrulle. Att laga risgrynsgröt i en vanlig kastrull som icke har teflon är näst intill hopplöst. Han fick verkligen ta i och skrura för att få kastrullen ren.

Scones blev supergoda. Det är allt något visst med nybakat varmt bröd som man tar ut ur ugnen. Dessutom sprider det en sådan härlig och mysig doft i hela köket.

Sedan skymtade jag något så exotiskt ut genom fönstret som sol och blå himmel. Det gällde att skynda sig ut innan den gick ner. Här har man inte lång tid på sig. Vi bestämde oss därför att ta en promenad. Man bara MÅSTE ta tillfället i akt då solen visar sig. Jag känner mig så depraverad på sol så att jag måste ta alla tillfällen i akt att få tanka på lite.

Vi tog färjan över till andra sidan. Här är det som sagt gott om folk som cyklar även om vintern. Kyla är inget som avskräcker. Idag var det vackert men riktigt kallt med ca 12 minus grader. När det är sådana här vinterdagar älskar även jag vintern. Då är det helt ok att solen bara är uppe några få timmar om jag är ledig och kan njuta av solljuset och få mig en dos. Nu delar jag med mig av bilderna och den vackra promenaden vi fick.

God fortsättning på eran söndag.

Jag fick just mina fotoböcker från My Publisher från våran road trip som vi gjorde i augusti innan vi lämnade USA. Äntligen kom de fram som de skulle. Jag fick hänga en påse på dörren och skriva en fullmakt till Fedex så att de kunde lämna paketet utan att jag behövde vara hemma och signera. Jag är bara så himla nöjd! Boken blev otroligt bra. Ja den översteg mina förväntningar. My Publisher håller sådan kvalité och otrolig service så jag tror det kommer vara svårt att hitta någon annan att ersätta dem med då det gäller fotoböcker. Nu vet vi ju också hur vi ska göra med Fedex och leveranserna så det är mycket möjligt att jag fortsätter att beställa från My Publisher.

Nu sitter jag här och suckar förnöjt då jag tittar tillbaka på dessa bilder. Jag längtar redan efter nästa road trip. Jag älskar det här sättet att resa. Det är så enkelt att resa runt i USA med bil på det här sättet. Man känner vidderna, friheten och det finns så mycket fantastisk natur att njuta av. Det finns så mycket som finns kvar att se och uppleva. Jag ser fram emot fler underbara road trips. Vi håller på att plannera en till våren men jag ska läsa på lite mer innan jag avslöjar vart det bär av. Åh så jag längtar redan. Det känns viktigt för mig att faktiskt ha något sådant att se fram emot och ta sikte på just nu när det känns mörkt, kallt och kämpigt. Eftersom klimatet här är just så bistert som det är känns det väldigt viktigt att få chansen att komma iväg. Jag ska beställa reseböcker här till jul så att jag som sagt kan börja plannera nästa resa. Jag gillar att läsa på i god tid och sedan kartlägga och lägga upp en reserutt.

Så otroligt skönt med fredag. Det har varit en hård och slitig vecka som nu är över. Nu ser jag fram emot att få sträcka ut mig i sängen och få en lugn och skön morgon utan stress imorgon. Nu tror jag att jag har en date med sängen och kuddarna.

Spotting Swedish moments

This is just so Swedish, sitting outside having coffee even if it is in the middle of the winter and it is freezing cold outside. I smiled when I saw these people sitting outside this coffee shop and thought to myself that this sure is a sight I would never have seen in Alabama. Maybe sitting outside is about getting some sunlight. Swedes are desperate about getting sunlight and love the sun. I sure understand why considering the sun gets up after 8 am now days and sets before 3 pm. I still have not gotten used to this darkness. I really find it very hard to cope with even if I light my candles at home and try to make it as cozy as I possibly can. Maybe sitting outside also is connected to memories of sunnier summer days also in some way.


I did bring my camera with me to work last Friday and since I was leaving early for my hair cut I was able to get some pictures before the sun set. It sure is winter now here. There is plenty of snow and the feeling of christmas is in the air. I can´t believe that it is only about two more weeks before it actually is christmas. I am soooo looking forward to some days off.

I am still surprised to see many people biking to work even if it is cold and snowy. I admire them for doing so. I feel it is too cold and dark. It feels kind of dangerous to bike as I would have to cross the center of the city that has a lot of traffic. Also I would probably have to change and shower if I did bike to work and I don´t have that possibility. I am just not used to the snow in this way. I guess I am not that hard core Swedish.:-)

At St. Eriksplan they have the first cup cake shop here in Sweden. Yeah we are kind of behind here when it comes to cup cakes. I peaked inside and I must say I was not impressed by the cup cakes I saw here. I guess I have gotten spoiled by the impressive pieces of art that cup cakes are in the US. After having seen Martha Stewart´s cup cakes and Cake Boss these were just regular cup cakes with some frosting in different tastes and colors but nothing more than that.However I liked the stores delivery bike that was parked outside and the cute cardbord boxes with the colorful ribbons that had gotten all snowy.

Here is another bike that I spotted. Here is some one that is getting serious about christmas decorations. I wonder if this person was going to hang ALL of these ornaments in their tree.

Another difference between Sweden and the US is that christmas decorations are much more modest here. Had this been an american apartment building this wreath would have been so much bigger and I am also sure there would have been several of them and they probably would have been decorated with big red bows also. Here there is ONE small modest one hanging above the entrance door. But I still think it is pretty in a different way.
